Iron Lady of Asia: Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago died at 71

Miriam Defensor-Santiago was a remembered as the Iron Lady of Asia by his colleagues and legislators.
Santiago was also known as constitutionalist and was also elected as the judge of International Criminal Court(ICC). However, she stepped down from the post in June 2014. After several weeks, The late senator was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

News of Santiago’s death was confirmed by her husband Narciso “Jun” Santiago Jr., who said the ex-senator died peacefully at 8:52 a.m. on Thursday at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City.

Miriam was known to be a fighter. She filed for presidential candidacy and joined the May 2016 Elections with former senator Bongbong Marcos as his running mate. Despite her serious health conditions, Miriam manage to finish the presidential elections.

“She [Miriam] was a shining light in Philippine political anals for her sharp legal mind, uncompromising stand, and acid humor,” said Presidential Spokesperon Ernesto Abella.

Malacañang also remembered Asia’s Iron Lady as someone who had a profound influence on millennials and the youth, and a person who constantly challenged preconceived social and political notions.

“Her passing also signals the passing of an era of politicians with wide ranging intelligence and the courage to express their true convictions,” Abella disclosed.

Senator Miriam was the best legislator we had in many decades that passed. Her lost will be a lost of many women in the Philippines. She will be remember as the Iron Lady of Asia
